The Best of Me

Author: Nicholas Sparks

Main Characters: Dawson Cole, Amanda Collier

Fave Quote: “Because you aren’t just someone I loved back then. You were my best friend, my best self, and I can’t imagine giving that up again.” He hesitated searching for the right words. “You might not understand, but I gave you the best of me, and after you left, nothing was ever the same.” ~Dawson

“Everyone wanted to believe that endless love was possible. She’d believed in it once, too, back when she was eighteen.”

In the spring of 1984, high school students Amanda Collier and Dawson Cole fell deeply, irrevocably in love. Though they were from opposite sides of the tracks, their love for one another seemed to defy the realities of life in the small town of Oriental, North Carolina. But as the summer of their senior year came to a close, unforeseen events would tear the young couple apart, setting them on radically divergent paths.

Now, twenty-five years later, Amanda and Dawson are summoned back to Oriental for the funeral of Tuck Hostetler, the mentor who once gave shelter to their high school romance. Neither has lived the life they imagined . . . and neither can forget the passionate first love that forever changed their lives. As Amanda and Dawson carry out the instructions Tuck left behind for them, they realize that everything they thought they knew—about Tuck, about themselves, and about the dreams they held dear—was not as it seemed. Forced to confront painful memories, the two former lovers will discover undeniable truths about the choices they have made. And in the course of a single, searing weekend, they will ask of the living, and the dead: Can love truly rewrite the past?

I have to admit, I’m a sucker for mushy love stories. Lately, this world had been a tad depressing with all the bad things happening and sometimes a good book is just what we need to escape from it all, don’t you think? And if you’re feeling lonely..unloved…or having love problems, might I suggest that you pick up a book by Nicholas Sparks–because for me, he is an amazing love story writer.

The Best of Me is about two high school sweethearts whose relationship didn’t exactly work out the way they planned. Aren’t majority of young romances like that? You fall in love and plan a future for the both of you, but then things–people–life gets in the way. And those perfect plans become nothing but a memory. The feeling of being sure of a having a life together becomes complicated. That’s exactly what Dawson and Amanda went through. After twenty-five years, Fate had brought them together again, and they’re forced to relieve their memories and awaken feelings which had been tucked in the deepest part of their hearts for a long time.

Sparks novels are mostly predictable–but in this book, there was a part which caught me off-guard. There was a turn of events changing my view on what the ending might be. As usual, it made me cry 😛 That’s what I love about Sparks’ books. They’re written beautifully and the plot is realistic. Things like that do happen in real life (We just don’t know it, but it does). The narration was great as well; the way Sparks describe the character’s thoughts and feelings, (even their dialogues) were perfect! The right words were printed on their respective pages on the book. Everything was just in place!

I think the lesson I’ve learned from this novel is that when you find something real, don’t ever let it go. Because once you let it slip from your grasp, you might never get the chance to have it again. Well, let’s just say only  few are given second chances…

Rating: 4!

The Best of Me is heart-warming. Another beautiful novel by the god of all tragic but amazing love stories 😛 Nicholas Sparks definitely knows how to tap into my mushy side.
