“My heart is your heart,” he said, “My hands are your hands.” – Clary and Jace

Synopsis

The demon Lilith has been destroyed and Jace has been freed from her captivity. But when the Shadowhunters arrive to rescue him, they find only blood and broken glass. Not only is the boy Clary loves missing–but so is the boy she hates, Sebastian, the son of her father Valentine: a son determined to succeed where their father failed, and bring the Shadowhunters to their knees.

No magic the Clave can summon can locate either boy, but Jace cannot stay away—not from Clary. When they meet again Clary discovers the horror Lilith’s dying magic has wrought—Jace is no longer the boy she loved. He and Sebastian are now bound to each other, and Jace has become what he most feared: a true servant of Valentine’s evil. The Clave is determined to destroy Sebastian, but there is no way to harm one boy without destroying the other. Will the Shadowhunters hesitate to kill one of their own?

Only a small band of Clary and Jace’s friends and family believe that Jace can still be saved — and that the fate of the Shadowhunters’ future may hinge on that salvation. They must defy the Clave and strike out on their own. Alec, Magnus, Simon and Isabelle must work together to save Jace: bargaining with the sinister Faerie Queen, contemplating deals with demons, and turning at last to the Iron Sisters, the reclusive and merciless weapons makers for the Shadowhunters, who tell them that no weapon on this earth can sever the bond between Sebastian and Jace. Their only chance of cutting Jace free is to challenge Heaven and Hell — a risk that could claim any, or all, of their lives.

And they must do it without Clary. For Clary has gone into the heart of darkness, to play a dangerous game utterly alone. The price of losing the game is not just her own life, but Jace’s soul. She’s willing to do anything for Jace, but can she even still trust him? Or is he truly lost? What price is too high to pay, even for love?

Review

The City of Lost Souls is the 5th book in the best-selling Mortal Instruments series. Before I start with the review on the contents of the novel, I would just like to comment on the book cover…which is absolutely beautiful! I couldn’t have asked for a better model to portray Jace Lightwood. HAHA!

Okay. So, this book had me impatiently waiting for 6 months, and I am happy to say that it was totally worth waiting for. The Mortal Instruments series just keep getting better and better. CoLS starts out with Jace missing. As we all know, Jace had disappeared along with Sebastian (Clary’s brother) in the ending of City of Fallen Angels. Jace is now bound to Sebastian and obedient to all his will, making him a servant of evil. And the worse part: there is no way of killing Sebastian without killing Jace as well. Clary will do anything to get Jace back, even if means breaking the law. The Clave had De-prioritized the search for Jace and this had set her on the edge. She is determined to find them and discover the evil plan of her brother.

Cassandra Clare had me hooked with her tales of Shadowhunters and downworlders from the very first chapter of City of Bones (book 1). CoLS has everything! Romance, action, mystery, humor, and (believe it or not) moral. Although in this book, the romance element is more pronounced (reason for the cover :P). Not only does it show the relationship between Clary and Jace, but also Magnus and Alec, Isabelle and Simon, and Jordan and Maia. (which made the book look like a bible of love stories) Anyway, the antagonist was pretty awesome as well. I think Sebastian is one of the best villains I’ve seen in action in a novel; he is just pure evil–and what he almost did to Clary was just despicable!  (Sorry, can’t tell what–spoiler alert!)

The ending…well let’s just saying you’ll begging for the next book once you’re done. The next and last book in the Mortal Instruments–City of Heavenly Fire– is scheduled to be release in March 2014. I know.. it’s going to be an agonizing 2 years of waiting. *sigh* Well, at least that gives us time to prepare for the ‘hopefully’ explosive ending. 😛

City of Lost Souls was electrifying. Fast-paced events, fluid narration, and sizzling-hot romances! It’s pure ecstasy! 🙂 Recommended!
